Equine Osteopathy can be used to help improve the overall function of your horse's body, helping to restore a sense of balance and well-being. Osteopathic techniques use touch, joint manipulation, stretching and massage to help improve joint mobility, relieve muscle tension, improve blood supply and nerve supply to tissues, and stimulate the horse's own healing mechanisms to bring about a positive change.
Osteopathy is based on the principle that health and well-being of the body as a whole depend on the skeleton, muscles, ligaments and connective tissues, such as fascia, functioning smoothly together.
All horses and ponies can benefit from osteopathic treatment, whether they are eventers, show jumpers, dressage horses, race horses, show horses, endurance horses, polo ponies, team chasers, Pony Club ponies and horses, hunters, or just happy hackers!
Osteopathy can help elite level horses as well as those just starting out on their careers. All horses are performance athletes, and just like their human equivalents, they benefit from regular treatment to keep them in optimum health and allow them to perform to their best.
There are a wide range of symptoms and issues that may be helped by osteopathic treatment. Please contact me if you notice one or more of the following, or would like help with any of the issues listed:
If you notice any other symptoms please contact me to see if osteopathic treatment may be appropriate.
Osteopathy can help all horses and ponies, even if exhibiting no obvious symptoms. Osteopathy uses a holisitic approach to check the function of all areas of your horse's body. In this way minor issues and restrictions can be identified and treated before they lead to more serious problems in the future.
Many owners will book their horses in for maintenance treatments every 3-6 months to help improve joint mobility, elasticity of muscles and general well-being.
Osteopathy can also be used pre and post competition to stretch muscles, maintain joint mobility and reduce areas of muscle tension - helping to prepare the horse for competition or aid in recovery.
I normally treat horses in their own stable yard. It is preferable for the horse to rest after treatment, so long trips in the horsebox are not advisable immediately after the treatment. Some owners like to bring their horses to specific yards for a clinic day of osteopathic treatment, allowing them to share the travel fees associated with treatment.
I will take a case history, asking questions about previous injuries and illness, activities/competitions the horse takes part in, tack used, any shoeing or dental issues etc. The horse will be assessed at walk, trot, performing circles and standing. I will then work through the whole body to assess for areas of dysfunction e.g. joint restriction and muscle tightness. Usually any issues are treated as they are identified. No sedation is used during treatment.
You will be advised on any restrictions to activity that will aid recovery.
ARE YOU AFFECTING YOUR HORSE?
Your horse may have to change the way it moves to compensate for a problem with you - the rider. For example, if you suffer from back pain or have problems with your hip or knee, you may sit in the saddle differently, or change the way you distribute your weight through the saddle and therefore the horse’s back. This in turn affects the way the horse supports your weight, and may change its way of moving. Any problems you have in the arm or shoulder may change the way you make contact with the horse's mouth or use the rein. Again, this can affect the way your horse uses their body and the way they respond to your aids. Anything that forces your horse to alter its way of going may lead to problems and restrictions developing within the muscles, ligaments and joints of your horse's body, which may ultimately result in pain and poor performance.
Some horses will be able to compensate better than others for problems with their rider, but without question, performance will improve if you're both at your best.
I have a mobile treatment table and can give a horse and rider treatment in the same session. This may involve watching you ride to help identify the areas of dysfunction.
I am located near Kingsbridge in South Devon. I cover all areas of South Devon including Dartmoor for horse and dog treatments. Other areas considered - please enquire.

It is a legal requirement for all osteopaths and other manual therapists to gain veterinary permission to treat an animal. This is normally a simple process. I will take your details and then contact your vet to gain permission to treat.
The cost of osteopathic treatment is often covered by insurers. It is the responsibility of the owner to check their policy before booking a session. A receipt can be provided upon request.
